Happy International Book Day! Which is your favorite adaptation of a book into film?
Hi there!
From Filmarket Hub we want to wish you a Happy International Book Day!
On the day of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare’s anniversary, we want to ask you:
What’s your favourite adaptation of a book into a movie?
Here are ours, produced by A Contracorriente Films, Roxbury Productions, Vaca Films & Filmax, all Filmarket Pro companies:
Did you know that more and more Hollywood studios as well as European production companies are resorting to book adaptations to make new films? Considering there has always been a discomfort in producing book adaptations (for fear of becoming a cheap and bad adaptation of the original material), what has made studios change their minds towards novel adaptations?
- The popularity of the source material: books like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead or The Lord of the Rings, have made it easier and/or safer to develop a TV show or film, knowing that there’s already a big fan base out there. Having said that, it can become a double-edged sword if the end product isn’t up to standards of the fans, but at least you’ll have that built in audience to begin with.
- It’s easier to get attention from audiences: continuing with the previous idea, if you already have a recognizable story, you will most likely rise above the noise that Netflix, video games, other films and the internet in general, are making.
- Finding the right medium for your story adaptation: books like A Song of Ice and Fire where made precisely, as George R.R Martin says — because he was tired of the constraints that were put on his scripts — and finally found a home at HBO to produce a fair adaptation of his books, with little constraints. This means, it is important to choose well what to adapt and to what medium you want to adapt it; some stories work well as a TV show, others are better of set in the world of film due to the type of story they tell. The important part is to find the right fit for your story adaptation.
- Availability of channels and mediums: as VOD channels proliferate, you have better chances of getting your adaptation made, as formats have evolved from the single sit-com to complex, in- depth development of storylines, plot and character.
- Helps publishing houses: having a successful adaption of a book will bring in higher profits for publishing houses, which struggle to make a profit with the rest of its authors (in general). Writers like J.K Rowling, George R.R. Martin or Stephenie Meyer are the ones evening out the balance sheet at the end of the month with their sales to adapt its book to a film or TV show, so, take into account you’re helping struggling authors when you decide to adapt a popular book!
As you can see, there’s plenty of advantages in taking an already existing story and turning it into a script!
Also, we can’t stop remembering and recomending these epic films, also produced by production companies such as StudioCanal, Movistar+, Morena Films & MOD Producciones; all of them Filmarket PRO, looking for new, original projects to produce here at Filmarket Hub:
And remember, a good adaptation of a book or a short story can sometimes help you develop stories as good as the original ones!
Now go! Read and adapt as much as you can!
